10th Annual Jane Austen Tea
Jane Austen's 238th birthday will be celebrated at Omaha Public Library's 10th Annual Jane Austen Tea. The afternoon will include light English fare, and participants are encouraged to bring their favorite teacups. Guest speaker Laura Mooneyham* White will present “Under the Hood: Data-Mining and Austen’s Habits of Speech,” which explains how computing can help us see the brilliant specific choices of how Austen created thought and speech in her novels. The Bookworm bookstore will have books and holiday gift items available for purchase. *Laura Mooneyham White is Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is the author of ‘Romance, Language, and Education in Jane Austen’s Novels’ and ‘Jane Austen’s Anglicanism;’ she is the editor of Critical Essays on Jane Austen, and has written numerous essays on Austen and other nineteenth-century British authors. She is a longstanding member of the editorial board of ‘Persuasions,’ the Jane Austen journal; her current work on Austen is a data-mining project that focuses on diction and discourse.
